A fine group of military and personal effects highlighted by an exceptionally rare Boer War servicemen's diary
His diary entries commence with several pages of general notes which are followed by "Notes taken when trekking in South Africa, on active service with the 2nd Tasmanian Infy Contingt Bushmen. Jan 7th (Mon) went into camp at New Town Hobart, was there for 3wks before knowing whether I was selected. Given a beautiful chestnut horse 3 years (not a horse chestnut). First time I got on him with spurs he bolted. I wanted to go one way, he another. We went; he then stopped and I also stopped, not of my own will but by the ground....". Later entries are more sombre including details of shootings: "Pte Moore 17 Lancers shot through r. thigh, left to right, came out back; .... shot through head with Mauser revolver bullet...; Sgt Spurling Scout shot through lower thigh and through head .... arteries taken from body."
The Second Tasmanian Imperial Bushmen Contingent comprising 12 officers, 241 others and 289 horses embarked at Hobart on the transport 'Chicago' on 27th March 1901 and landed at Port Elizabeth on 24th April. The contingent's service was in Cape Colony between May 1901 and March 1902. Six of the contingent were killed or died, the remainder returned to Tasmania. Private Edward (sic) Barron appears with promotion to Corporal Field Hospital 22.6.01 on the nominal roll.
Ebenezer Barron was born 1866 at Leith in Scotland; he died at Hobart Tasmania on 11th November 1940.
